Pop x can do no wrong. This year I saw: Amelia curran, rich aucoin with every artist in Halifax that day, something good, Bonjay, braids, keysncrates, one hundred dollars, scratch bastid, Dj y rush, the balconies, the deadly hearts, the paint movement, the thermals, town heros.... And I missed a pile of rad shows. Whoops. The surf was going off and I got gobbled

by a coach with a mouse living in it! Good times!

Woodshed Films, Patagonia, and NIXON are proudto announce the Canadian premiere for Keith Malloy’s debut film project, ComeHell or High Water.

The film explores the history and progression ofthe sport of bodysurfing and the pureness that comes from riding a wave. Shotprimarily in 16mm, the film takes a unique look at the culture, beauty andsimplicity of the sport, capturing the stories and locations of those whobelong to this community.

While Malloy is most widely known for his time inthe water as a surfer, his exploration into the world of bodysurfing began some10 years ago when he wanted to reconnect with the ocean and did so throughbodysurfing. Said Malloy about this project, “It’s about taking a breath and kickingyour feet in the big blue sea.”

The Canadian premiere of "Come Hell orHigh Water" will take place on October 1st, 6:30PM at theCanadian Surf Film Festival, Empire Theatre Park Lane. Keith Malloy isscheduled to attend the event and NIXON will be on hand to give out popcorn tothe first 200 ticket holders.

Canmore eh? well that's manifesto of town name if I ever heard one.

we skateboarded around. went to a natural food store and found breakfast.

from there we went to Banff - dilly daddleling all the way. decided to stay there. we went for a swim in the pool got ready and went to the freestylers show at the Saskwatch. went skateboarding and ate poutine after. yes yes yes!!

went to alberta for a wedding in three hills. it took place in a beautiful arboretum. a few people from the ' hood were their (Shorecore!). we were landlocked and surrounded by bright yellow canola fields.ang the pretty bride and deedee pretty photographer- we used to all live on the same block

from three hills we headed to the Calgary stampede.

I worked virtually from my "car office" and then joined in the watching the show. I spun a wheel - won 4 bucks, watched kids try to ride a pony, saw ladies race around muddy field, etc etc.

from there, we went to a brewery in calgary for dinner called: wild rose

I had pulled pork sandwich which was delicious with potato salad - tooo much food.

That night we drove to until we were tired which was in Canmore! good times. we went swimming and ate good food.

sooooo. it aint easy leaving the coast especially in the summer when even crappy waves are fun. BUT sometimes music and fesivalities call.

Headed to Folly Fest on Thursday. Folly Fest is presented by a really nice crew of new brunswickers: FeelsGood

I missed the first two years of this fest. My fav boppers did attend years 1 and 2 so i knew what i had missed. so when my fav fella got booked for Thursday of this year's festival, my attendance status was sealed. could this be the break-out year? I think yes!

Folly Fest was very well done. it was a perfect festival for both seasoned festival goers and newbies.

and alledgedly, feelsgood did some fancy community work, raising funds to keep the local fire department in action. wowowow. talk about giving back. I spent $250+ (probably way more but that's how much I want to admit to - ha!) so im gunna make an uneducated guess and say that at least 100+k went back into the local economy cuz of Folly Fest. yay!

sooooo, thanks to Billabong, Kannon Beach, Von Zipper, Kustom, Excel and Nixon, EC Lips, Christian Surfers Canada - we get to put on a women's contest every year. we decided to switch things up this year and have a winter expression session.

this is the best format EVER. we got to wait for surfable surf (hey, we live in NS, we need friggin long waiting periods) and we filmed the session to be judged after the fact.

The energy was awesome. Sarah from Rose and Rooster bakery showed up with COOKIES:)

the footage was judged by master longboarder: Sarah Zollinger, Local yokel: Jermaine Morris, SANS president and winner of 2010 SAN men's shortboarding division (whut): Justin Houston and the one and only pro surfer from ns (owner of East Coast Quicksilver Surf School): Nico Manos.

It was an insanely tight competition. the level of women's surfing is getting better and better in lil ole NS - we need to thank the energy of up and comers like Jill Manos (who regrettably missed the contest) for this surge in talent.

I did not complete and must admit, cheering is the funnest part!

from the coast.ca: an epic street dance battle happens Friday, April 15 at DANSpace (1531 Grafton) at 8pm. Advance tickets are $5 and it's $10 at the door. Moore expects around 60 dancers to show up flashing all kinds of styles, including breakdancing, hip-hop, popping and krumping. The night will be hosted by Ivan, a pro bboy who's in town for the Michael Jackson tribute show, King Michael. Ivan will pick the night's five best to bust moves with him in Saturday's King Michael performance.

Everything feels like a dream when you step off the plane. The plam trees swaying in the breeze seem like a mirage, the warm water on your bikini clad body can't actually be that warm. Wow I love traveling!!!!

I've just returned home from a trip to Barbados with my friends Julie, Scott and their two little rapscallions Malia and Naia. We scored fun surf pretty much everyday! The first and last session were the best for me. Soup Bowl was playful and punchy at the same time, I only met the reef once thankfully!

Julie and Malia making the walk down to Maycox, even Malia was getting the hang of surfing during the trip! Super cute :) look out Nova Scotia two future gromettes are in the making.

First session of the trip! The world is such a small place the photographer posted these pics on facebook and the next morning and I was magically tagged through a friend of my boyfriend, I was stoked to log on and see these flicks!!! (Thanks Mark!!!) If you're in Barbados and want some surf shots give this bro a shout!

Julie and Malia checking out the goods at Crane beach. This vendor makes very unique and rad necklaces out of lucky nuts that supposedly make a long trek across the ocean from Africa.

The maps of Barbados and signage will make you temporaily loose your sanity, just breathe and realise that and inch of map = only 10 minutes of driving and you will be fine!

I was very impressed with the surfers in Barbados not only were most of them ripping they were all friendly and respectful as well. Such a nice vibe :)

On Sunday January 23rd Pro Girl, Billabong and Martock present;

“Busted”

A day dedicated to the ladies who are just beginners all the way to the hard-cores who kill it.
...
There will be a ladies “Learn to Ride” lessons for beginners and a ladies snowboard contest through out the day.

In the “Learn to Ride” package you get lift pass, rental gear and a 2 hour small group lesson for $30! The lesson starts at 10 am, so you NEED to be at the hill for registration at 9:30 am.

You are also invited to participate in a Free BBQ, hang out in the chill lounge, ride with us ladies from Pro Girl and go home with a FREE goodie bag.

The whole day is a great way to meet new ladies who, like yourself are stoked on snowboarding and meeting new friends. Please be prepared to laugh, give encouragement, go home with wicked stuff and (let’s be realistic here) maybe some bruises too.

The day before yesterday my friends in New Jersey were complaining about being snowed in. We were supposed to be getting the same storm system as them so in fear of being stuck at home watching weather from my living room window I called up one of my best friends and photog Nic Thorne and convinced him to come with me on a surf adventure!

We headed 3 hours up the coast and crashed at local shredder Michelle Richard's place. The next day after scouting out some waves and trying to surf at another spot (which turned out to have way more current than we expected.) Michelle suggested we take my car as far as it would into the woods and then walk out to a spot that never breaks but might be breaking today and not have as much wind on it compared to the other spots.

Down some road, up some bluff, through some woods, sneaking a pic of Nic.

Nic and Michelle right before it started to snow.... on the hunt for some surfable, clean, non currenty waves.

The spot she was talking about wasn't quite doing it but we found these nuggets, never surfed before so we took the liberty of naming the spot Pinche Olas, because it was bumpy, bouncy, windy and shloppy and looked way better out of the water than in. I might try to surf it again probably in 3 years from now and on a low tide.

The views were amazing. Even though we were semi skunked it was a fun adventure. Although if it was minus 10 I probably wouldn't be saying that haha. We could see lots of huge waves in the distance but we reckon you would of needed a jet ski to get into them and guts of steel. I forgot both of those things at home. Oops.

My surfboard made a new friend. This tree was rocking some mad buoy bling.

Nic and I drove through this for 4 hours to get back home. Seeing as I don't have snow tires I decided it was an optical illusion. Snow tires not needed. We also saw a Yeti jogging on the side of the road... no joke.

Still smiling even if the surf wasn't epic. Staying at home means you will probably get some good waves at a spot you know like the back of your hand, with friends you see all the time. Thats fun' n all but getting in your car and taking a chance to scout out some new waves with friends is pretty rad too.

World Surf Games

The 2010 World Surf Games were held in Punta Hermosa, Peru. It was an amazing experience I am proud to say I was a part of.

The team from left to right: Jacob Albury, Logan Landry, Coach Jim Hogan, Me! Janine Strickland, Brain Villenueve, Julie Baldwin,(in her arms Naia), John Fluke, Ben Woodford, and Myles Baldwin

Over all we placed 25th out of 31 Countries, Julie came 24th and I came 23rd out of 54 women. Currently we have the highest ranking for Canadian Women in the history of the event!

saw these guys for the first time almost two years ago at agricola open mic. i remember it clearly because i had an epic morning surf with just me and surfer joe, followed by a shred snowboard session at martock only to end my night with rad peeps at charlies and then agricola.

anyways, since then jacques of Krasnogorsk came to the beach for a visit with Julia Feltam and company. Jacques played his fiddle while balancing on the indo board. they were a lovely posse.

last time i saw the band play, it was at the lahave bakery below homegrown skateboards- epic.

you should probably go see them play this week. yer options include: tonight at the seahorse, Friday with gypsophellia and sat in la have!

yeup, one of the best events in the province did yet another fab job of presenting music in Halifax. Under new leadership, Jonny Stevens, we anticipated the 2010 results.

I failed at conferencing, zining and afterpartying but here's what I got:

Bootstraps feat: Orphanage Clothing (Kim Munsun!) and acres and acres (music!). This was awesome. High quality crowd. It was so nice to Kim's team make the event happen as models would come out every 5 minutes and pose in a different scene in the art gallery.

IT KILLS was amazing. they sound amazing, captivating, their set up looked kindof biblical which added to the scene. stopped by the paragon to get stamped.. saw one song by dilly dally - kind of a raw version of tegan and sara. hoofed to st matts to dance to handsome furs - so great. love married musicians and double key boardage

Paragon did a better job than ever at getting people in and out da doors. good job fellas. I liked ghostkeeper. the girl drummer had a great voice. yay.

missed quite a few good parts but it was worth it to see one of my favourites for the few hours he was in town.

I started surfing in high school due to peer pressure. went in competitions a few years in cuz there were no ladies. eventually started using a longboard more, and would often place third (against some of my local idols: Kim Childs and Michelle Richards). well, I was starting to feel like i didnt need to compete any more - there were lots of ladies and I wasnt feelin it.

dragged my butt to the beach. first heat was against some very talented gals. when i made it out of that heat, i was satisfied with the day. went into the finals and ended up surfing better than i ever have in a contest. and here are the results:

Winter Wave Riders and the Canadian Surf Film Festival Kick off!!!

The Canadian Surf Film Festival (CSFF) Official Launch Party is announced for this Saturday, September 18th in partnership with the Atlantic Film Festival!! **

The CSFF will be playing a highlight reel of our film program and will have program brochures on site, listing all official CSFF film selections and events.

The Launch Party we will also be hosting a panel... with critically-acclaimed filmmakers Eva Madden and Yassine Ouhilal discussing their experiences creating winter surf films in frigid climates. These two are on the cutting edge of canadian surf filmmaking. Not to be missed!

The timing of this works perfectly as Eva's short film on winter surfing in Nova Scotia, 'Winter Wave Riders' featuring local surfers Nico Manos, Lesley Choice and One Life's own Janine Strickland will be screened as part of the Atlantic Film Festival's Atlantic Shorts program, 2pm September 18th, Empire Theaters Park Lane. So go check out the film and then come up to Victor's (Both in Park Lane Mall) for the launch party and panel.

Hi Everyone!!! I snuck back down to Mexico for July, I had a couple of reasons 1) i missed my boyfriend, 2) I get to surf everyday here = more training for the World competition this October, 3)because everyone involved in OL is so rad I could go and know the world wouldn't fall apart! well a monthly road trip seems to be habit. took off to NYC and then to Montreal for some laughs.

got pretty sick but still had a blast (pics do not do the trip justice):

best part of going away is coming home!

came home from rad roadtrip. greeted by the ocean, long wild grass and the backyard cows.

i love home! within two days i saw lovely people, skateboarded around the city, shopped at biscuit and proGirl, went for a fun surf at the reef, chatted with the awesome peeps at Kannon Beach Surf Shop, had lunch on citadel hill - listening to rich aucoin and hot hot heat, cheered on the Pride parade, saw weezer and the black eyed peas play on the commons and was read to in the sun by my favourite - turns out we cant be in two places at once... we're just too big. need a shrinking machine and THEN a teleporter. quantum theory is a thorny rose:)
